The St. Louis Cardinals have been swinging a bunch of trades this offseason. Chaim Bloom has been trading away a ton of talent this offseason.

Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and most recently, Brendan Donovan have all been dealt this offseason. But another could be on the horizon.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield proposed a trade that would have Bloom sending 2.07 ERA lefty reliever JoJo Romero to the Toronto Blue Jays for a .797 OPS outfielder in 27-year-old Davis Schneier.

Cardinals trade proposal swaps JoJo Romero for Davis Schneider

“Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom is on the record as looking for a right-handed outfield bat,” Schoenfield writes, “and with Austin Hays just signing with the White Sox, the free agent market is thin.”

With a lack of good options in free agency, Schoenfield proposes that the Cardinals and Blue Jays link up on the following deal: “Toronto Blue Jays trade OF Davis Schneider to Cardinals for LHP JoJo Romero.”

This trade is a one-for-one swap that would be a massive win for the Cardinals. This proposal would be hard to see in reality, and for one main reason: control.

Romero is only under club control for one more year. Schneider, meanwhile, is under contract for four more seasons.

The Cardinals, in a trade for Schneider, would more likely need to give up more than just Romero. While the Blue Jays need a lefty in their bullpen, Romero, whose 2.07 ERA season might be a fluke, likely won’t be enough.

But, if it is enough to land Schneider, as Schoenfield is proposing, it would be a massive coup for the Cardinals and Bloom this offseason.

Schneider has a .797 OPS this past season in 82 games. While he wasn’t the best in 2024, with a .625 OPS in 135 games, he’s still a good trade piece that would be very valuable to the Cardinals.

This proposal from Schoenfield would be a dream trade for Bloom and the Cardinals. Adding someone like Schneider, who’s only 27 years old and under club control for the next four years, for a one-year rental of Romero, a reliever, would be a no-brainer for S.t Louis.
