The Baltimore Orioles went on to have one of the bigger moves of the MLB offseason with the signing of Pete Alonso. While this move to sign Alonso made sense to further advance the team, it also created a bit of a logjam at the first base spot.
*Prediction*
With already having Ryan Mountcastle at first base, it creates a bit of a dilemma as to if Mountcastle is still in the long-term plans for Baltimore or if they will move on from him.
For Baltimore, it would make more sense for them to trade Mountcastle and get value in return. If this ends up being the case, one team at this point in the offseason that makes sense to sign him is the San Diego Padres.

Baltimore Orioles Trade Ryan Mountcastle to the San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres were heavily involved in trying to sign Paul Goldschmidt before he went on to return to the New York Yankees. With missing out on him as well as Luis Arraez, the Padres are left searching for their next answer at first base for the 2026 season.
This is something they need to make sure isn’t an issue, as they are set to be one of the top teams that can contend with the Los Angeles Dodgers. For them to fix this, they can turn to trying to trade for Ryan Mountcastle.
Mountcastle dealt with injuries that limited him to just 89 games during the regular season last season. When he was healthy, he hit a .250/.286/.367 slash line with seven home runs and 35 runs batted in.
Throughout his career, Mountcastle has demonstrated a remarkable ability to deliver above-average hitting performance consistently. His proficiency at the plate is characterized by a combination of solid contact skills, an impressive batting average, and the ability to drive in runs, making him a formidable presence in the lineup.
Mountcastle’s approach to hitting showcases his keen eye for the strike zone, allowing him to make informed decisions at the plate. His power-hitting capabilities further elevate his profile, as he has the potential to hit for both average and power, contributing significantly to a team’s run production.
For the San Diego Padres, targeting a player like Mountcastle could be a strategic move to bolster their offensive lineup. With the Padres aiming to compete at a high level, acquiring a player who can consistently produce at the plate would provide them with a much-needed edge. Mountcastle’s track record of performance suggests that he could thrive with the Padres. With him being just 28 years old, he can becoming a key contributor to their success in the coming seasons.
