The Houston Astros have been going through the entire offseason with a clear goal: fix the infield logjam. Carlos Correa’s addition has been nice, but it has made for a tricky infield situation.

Jeremy Pena, Jose Altuve, Isaac Paredes, Christian Walker, and Correa make up the infield in Houston, and with the DH spot filled, the Astros need to find a way to move one of these infielders. Of this group, Paredes is the most likely to be dealt.

Unfortunately for the Astros, two of his top landing spots might’ve just taken themselves out of the market. As Chandler Rome of The Athletic notes, the Astros might’ve just gotten some bad news Monday morning with the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates‘ moves.

Astros get bad news from Pirates, Red Sox on Isaac Paredes trade odds

“Trading for Caleb Durbin takes the Red Sox out of the Isaac Paredes conversations,” Rome notes. “In theory, Marcell Ozuna signing with the Pirates shouldn’t remove Pittsburgh, but it does decrease the likelihood. Other teams remain in play.”

While there are still teams showing interest in Paredes this offseason, the Astros top options were the Red Sox and Pirates, with both teams showing interest.

But, with the Red Sox acquiring Caleb Durbin from the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Pirates in agreement with Marcell Ozuna on a $12 million free agent deal, their top options are likely off the table.

Boston is surely no longer in the trade market for Paredes, as their infield is now set. The Pirates could still go after Paredes this offseason, but there’s no guarantee they continue adding to such a degree this offseason.

Two of the best landing spots for Paredes this offseason are no more, as the Astros now will have to pivot to some other options.

There will be interested teams, as Rome notes, but the best landing spots for Paredes are now, seemingly, off the board.

The All-Star slugger will likely have a new home for the 2026 season, but it’s not looking like it’s going to be the Pirates, and especially not the Red Sox.
