Mark Vientos of the New York Mets

The New York Mets have arguably, besides maybe the Cardinals and Red Sox, been the most active team in the MLB trade market. New York has sent away several players via trade, and has brought in names like Marcus Semien, Freddy Peralta, and outfielder Luis Robert. As MLB spring training approaches, if the Mets don’t have any plans of making another impact signing, David Stearns may be willing to make another trade or two.

The Pittsburgh Pirates recently landed Marcell Ozuna in MLB free agency, but they still need a right-handed hitter to help shore up the lineup in a weak National League Central. The Mets have a lot of desirable players that several teams across MLB may be inquiring about. Brett Baty has been the subject of trade rumors, but it doesn’t seem like he will be dealt. Another name that recently popped up in a trade article was Mets’ infielder Mark Vientos.

Mets Predicted to Offload Mark Vientos

In a recent trade piece by Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, the MLB writer predicts the Pittsburgh Pirates making a splash trade with the Mets to acquire Mark Vientos:

“If the Mets and Pirates did get to the point where they were talking a trade for Vientos, 23-year-old outfielder Jhostynxon García—whom the Pirates acquired from the Red Sox in the Johan Oviedo trade this offseason—could be an interesting name to consider as part of a return.”

The Mets’ infield room is starting to get really crowded, especially with the additions of Semien, Jorge Polanco, and Bo Bichette. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are trying to offload Vientos or Brett Baty, but it’s not exactly a far-fetched idea to think those two players might be traded.

The difference in this trade idea is that the Mets might actually be offloading Vientos for prospects, as Kelly outlines, so it wouldn’t exactly be a trade that immediately makes New York better.

What is Mark Vientos’ Role with the New York Mets?

Vientos has spent his four-year MLB career with the Mets. In 2025, he played in 121 games, hitting .233 with 17 home runs and 21 doubles, but the DH/third baseman struck out 115 times and posted a negative bWAR (-0.2).

However, Vientos enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 by hitting 27 home runs with an OPS+ of 134 over 111 games. It’s unclear why he took such a big step back last season, but it did also seem like things were a bit out of order in Queens in the back half of ’25.

There isn’t really any traction on the Mrk Vientos trade front, but there are sure to be more trades across MLB as February advances and spring training exhibitions begin.
