Third baseman Gio Urshela will avoid playing for the ninth different organization in his career and will sign with the Minnesota Twins on a minor league contract, according to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extra Base.Â
Urshela, 34, receives an invite to Major League spring training as a non-roster invitee and last played with the Twins in 2022. That season, the Colombian native hit .285/.338/.429 with 13 home runs and a .767 OPS in 144 games.Â
His career kick-started during his three seasons with the New York Yankees from 2019-21, where he became a fan favorite for his excellent glove work at the hot corner and timely hitting.Â
A crowded infieldÂ
Urshela may have some trouble landing an MLB role with the Twins, who have Royce Lewis as their starting third baseman and the younger Brooks Lee and Tristan Gray as backup depth.Â
However, Lewis is often injured and has played over 100 games in a season just once in his career. Before 2025, the first overall draft pick in 2017 had never eclipsed 82 contests. Urshela could be valuable if Lewis runs into injury troubles again.Â
Last season in 59 games with the Athletics, Urshela hit zero home runs and watched his OPS drop from .647 in 2024 to .613 in 2025.Â
