One year ago at this time, only the most ardent Houston Astros fans knew who Cam Smith was—and even then, they certainly didn’t know him as an outfielder. So, as Houston’s breakout star of 2025, what does Cam Smith do for an encore in his second MLB season?

The Astros acquired the young third-base prospect in the blockbuster Kyle Tucker trade, and when Smith started hitting everything in sight with a batting average north of .600 during spring camp, the organization decided he was “big-league ready,” even if it meant learning a new position. The Astros saw enough to give the experiment a chance, and Smith proved the brass right. By season’s end, Cam Smith was a Gold Glove finalist.

Recently, Cam Smith joined the Astros Caravan on a trip to Whataburger in San Antonio and was gracious enough to reflect on the season that was—and the season yet to come. In our conversation, Cam admitted he’s not quite sure how to approach Spring Training, which begins this week: whether to change his routine or keep things the same based on how well he performed last spring. He also shared an interesting perspective on how much he relied on teammate Jake Meyers to learn the nuances of playing the outfield.

Astros pitchers report to Spring Training on February 11, with position players like Cam arriving five days later.
