The Athletics continue to tweak their roster ahead of Spring Training.
With pitchers and catchers set to report later this week, the A’s completed a trade on Monday that sent infielder Max Schuemann to the New York Yankees in return for right-handed pitcher Luis Burgos.
Schuemann, 28, was designated for assignment on Friday after playing two seasons in green and gold.
Over 234 games with the Athletics, Schuemann hit .212 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, and a .306 on-base percentage. The Eastern Michigan University product spent most of his time at shortstop, third base, and second base, but also logged some innings in all three outfield spots.
After acquiring infielder Jeff McNeil in an offseason trade with the New York Mets, the Athletics had a surplus of infield depth entering Spring Training.
McNeil will open the season at second base, while Nick Kurtz (1B), Jacob Wilson (SS), and Shea Langeliers (C) all have spots locked down. Max Muncy is likely to begin the season at third base, although Andy Ibanez and Zack Gelof could push for the starting spot.
The Athletics have acquired RHP Luis Burgos from the Yankees in exchange for Max Schuemann.

Athletics’ release on the trade with New York
The Athletics have acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Luis Burgos from the New York Yankees for infielder Max Schuemann, the club announced today.
Schuemann was designated for assignment on Friday when the A’s claimed Andy Ibañez off waivers from Los Angeles (NL). He spent the entire season with the A’s last year, with the exception of a nine-day stay with Triple-A Las Vegas at the end of August. Schuemann played in 101 games but made just 47 starts and hit .197 with two home runs and 13 RBI. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter batted .212 with nine home runs and 47 RBI in 234 games in two seasons with the A’s.
Burgos was signed by New York out of the Dominican Republic on June 2, 2024, and has pitched two seasons with the Yankees’ affiliate in the Dominican Summer League.
He was 3-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 11 games, eight starts, with the Yankees Bombers team last year. The 20-year-old right-hander is 4-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 25 games, 10 starts, in his two seasons. Burgos has struck out 71 and walked 42 in 79.2 innings while holding the opposition to a .221 batting average.
