After dropping the series to the New York Yankees to end a short homestand, the Colorado Rockies are back on the road for nine games. Their first stop is in the Windy City, and the Friendly Confines of historic Wrigley Field. Today represents game one of three against the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs.
Rookie lefty Carson Palmquist will be making his third start of his big league career against the Cubs. Palmquist had a difficult outing the last time he took the mound. He yielded seven runs (six earned) on ten hits and four walks against the Philadelphia Phillies. However, he also earned his first two big league strikeouts. Palmquist will look to further learn and hone his craft this afternoon in a lost season that represents plenty of educational opportunities.
On the bump for the baby bears is right-handed veteran Jameson Taillon. Taillon has an ERA of 4.13 over his first ten starts this season with 44 strikeouts in 56 2⁄3 innings of work. The 33-year-old has a history of strong starts against the Rockies. In five career starts against them he has an ERA of 2.03 with 26 strikeouts over 31 innings, three home runs allowed, and nine walks.
Taillon gets a lot of value from his arsenal of offspeed pitches. He favors a sweeper, curveball, and cutter, but also throws a changeup with some regularity. He anchors his arsenal with a four seam fastball that averages 92.5 MPH and the occasional sinker.
