The Chicago White Sox made a big splash this offseason after signing Japanese standout Munetaka Murakami. The White Sox emerged as the big winners of the race for Nippon Professional Baseball’s two-time Central League MVP.
Murakami became one of the most sought-after free agents because of his stellar play in Japan. He won the Central League Rookie of the Year in 2019 and was named an NPB All-Star that same year. He quickly established himself as one of the best baseball players in the country. Murakami also led the Japanese team to a gold medal during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Chicago White Sox’s Munetaka Murakami gets Caleb Williams welcome
With Murakami’s arrival, the Windy City rejoices as it welcomes another cornerstone for the city of Chicago.
It was not too long ago when the Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams with the first overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. He quickly emerged as one of Chicago’s sports icons as he became the centerpiece of the Bears’ offense. Williams helped the Bears capture their first NFC North title since 2018 and their first playoff win since 2011.
Williams’ rise is somewhat similar to what Michael Jordan did to the Chicago Bulls back in the 1980s. Which is why it’s just right that the White Sox welcome their new player with two iconic Chicago jerseys.
The White Sox gave Murakami a Williams jersey to welcome him to the city. Mune said “Bear Down” and “It’s Chicago” while wearing Williams’ #18.
Not only that, but the White Sox also gifted him the iconic #23 of the Chicago Bulls. Murakami quickly put on Jordan’s jersey and said he plans on wearing it on the way to the game.
The White Sox expect great things from the 6-foot-2, 230-pound slugger from Japan. Murakami heads to the MLB with his 246 home runs for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. He joins a rebuilding White Sox with impressive young talent such as Colson Montgomery. This is why the future is looking bright for the organization.
