GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Clemson head baseball coach Erik Bakich reiterated his thoughts on pushing back the start of the college baseball season on Tuesday while previewing the Tigers’ opening weekend matchup.
“Let’s not kid ourselves,” Bakich said on Tuesday. “It’s not about weather, nobody cares about competitive equity. That’s not the needle mover to push the season back. It’s 100% about money.”
Bakich was part of a group of DI coaches that brought forth a formal proposal to bump back the beginning of the season in 2020, which he was coaching at Michigan. His sentiment on Tuesday was similar to what was brought up five years ago: pushing opening weekend back could benefit expenses, fans and player health.
Clemson’s coach also pointed out that starting the season in February demands energy from the fanbase due to the overlap with college basketball. His full thoughts, as shared on Tuesday, can be found in the video above.
Clemson opens its the current 2026 campaign on Friday, Feb. 13 with a three-game home series against Army West Point.
