The Athletics are looking to add more options at starting pitcher and agreed to a deal with right-hander Aaron Civale, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported.

Civale will make $6 million in 2026 while having an opportunity to earn an additional $1.5 million in incentives.

After struggling to put together the same success he had in 2023 with the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays, Civale has been with five different organizations over the past three years. The A’s will be his sixth.

Who is Aaron Civale?

After putting together a 7-5 record with a 3.46 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 2023 with the Cleveland Guardians, Aaron Civale was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024.

His time in Milwaukee was dramatic and ended with him requesting a trade from the team in 2025 after getting demoted to the bullpen.

He would bounce around the league, starting games and pitching as a reliever for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs as well, but struggled. In 23 appearances last season, Civale finished with a 4-9 record, 4.85 ERA, and 1.26 WHIP.

His small amount of experience in the postseason helped drive the Athletics to sign the right-hander, and he will get another opportunity with a team that’s hunting its first postseason birth since 2020.

He will join a pitching rotation that includes Jeffrey Springs, Luis Severino, Jacob Lopez, Luis Morales, and Jack Perkins.
