The Chicago Cubs are ready to start Spring Training as they prepare for the 2026 MLB season. Of course, this is the first time fans will get to see their newest star, Alex Bregman, take the field in a Cubs uniform. Earlier this winter, Chicago was able to land the three-time All-Star with a five-year $175 million contract.
Indeed, Bregman was one of the biggest names on the free agent market. His combination of Gold Glove defense and Silver Slugger offense is a rarity in baseball. However, in addition to the high level or production that he brings to the baseball diamond, Chicago is hoping for something much more from their new star.
The Chicago Cubs hope Alex Bregman will influence their culture

After winning to World Series Championships with the Houston Astros, Bregman reached free agency for the first time in 2024, but chose to sign a short-term deal with the Boston Red Sox. In 2025, he hit .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI.
He turned that production, which earned him his third career All-Star nod, into the lucrative contract he signed with Chicago.
However, ESPN reports that it was not just his impact on the diamond that made him their most coveted free agent target:
“Few players can impact a culture like Alex Bregman. That’s precisely why members of the Cubs were so excited to land him this offseason, one year after falling just short in their bid for the star third baseman. A member of the team’s front office called him “a transformative presence.” More tangibly, he also lengthens the lineup, prompting Matt Shaw to move into a utility role, where he should thrive.
“And with the Cubs replenishing their bullpen and adding a much-needed, potential front-line starter in Edward Cabrera this offseason, Bregman looks like the player who will put them over the top in the National League Central.”
As one can see, the Cubs were especially attracted to the effect Bregman has on team culture. He has long been heralded as a fantastic clubhouse leader, and adding him to a Chicago roster that made it to the postsesaon last year, but fell short of the NLCS by one game, could be a real game-changer.
