LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers formally announced the signing of veteran left-hander Framber Valdez on Tuesday.
Valdez will meet with the press on Wednesday, the spring training report day for pitchers and catchers.
Valdez agreed to a three-year deal worth a guaranteed $115 million, though the contract includes several notable quirks. He will earn $37.5 million in 2026 and $37.5 million in 2027, but $20 million of his 2026 salary will be labeled as a signing bonus and deferred until a series of payments begin in 2030.
Valdez can opt out after the 2027 season, but if he returns, he will earn $35 million in 2028. There is a mutual option for 2029 that is unlikely to be exercised, but it is valued at $40 million and includes a $5 million buyout.
Valdez’s salaries from 2027 through 2029 can be escalated based on awards earned in the preceding season. He would receive a $2 million increase for a first-place finish in Cy Young voting, $1 million for second place, and $500,000 for third place. His salary would also increase by $2 million if he is named World Series MVP or by $1 million if he wins ALCS MVP.
Valdez, 32, spent all eight years of his career with the Houston Astros, going 81-52 with a 3.36 ERA in 1,080 innings.
Over the last four seasons, he’s been one of baseball’s most reliable workhorse pitchers, averaging more than 30 starts per season.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Valdez signed with the Astros as a teenager in 2015. This will be just the second organization of his career.
After some shaky seasons as a youngster under then-Astros manager A.J. Hinch in 2018 and 2019, he established himself in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, striking out 76 in 70 innings. He’s been a full-time member of Houston’s rotation ever since, with his only significant injury coming on a fluke play in 2021 when he was struck by a ball on his finger.
Valdez’s durability is one of his strongest selling points. He’s thrown nine career complete games and three shutouts. He’s averaged 6 1/3 innings per start over the last five seasons. He set an MLB record in 2022 with 25 consecutive quality starts.
Because Valdez was given a qualifying offer by the Astros, the Tigers will have to give up a draft pick to sign him.
Under the complex MLB formula for compensation, the Astros will get the No. 134 overall pick and the Tigers will forfeit their third-round pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.
