The Mets have made another offseason move.

The New York Mets have had an active offseason. They have made multiple trades while signing a few big-name free agents. The biggest moves include signing Bo Bichette, bringing in a new closer in Devin Williams, trading for Marcus Semien, and replacing Pete Alonso with Jorge Polanco. There are multiple other notable moves, as well. With spring training starting up, the Mets are not done making moves.

Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, New York has traded for recently DFA’d relief pitcher Bryan Hudson from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations. Reed Garrett has been moved to the 60-day IL as a corresponding move.

The Mets acquired LHP Bryan Hudson from the White Sox for cash, club announced. In a corresponding move, they placed RHP Reed Garrett on the 60-Day IL.

Hudson will have to earn his role on the big league roster, but he could end up being a very good pickup for the Mets.

Bryan Hudson’s Last Two SeasonsBryan Hudson

GettyBryan Hudson had a very good 2024 season for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hudson made his debut in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, it was not his best showing. But the left-hander showed out during his rookie year.

Before the 2024 season, Hudson was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. It ended up being a fantastic acquisition for the Brewers. For Milwaukee, the then-27-year-old made 43 appearances, threw 62.1 innings, allowed just 28 hits, and struck out 62 batters. His 240 ERA+ was well above the Major League average.

He did not see the same success in 2025, though. He was DFA’d by the Brewers before the White Sox decided to take a chance on him.

Last season, Hudson made just 16 total appearances, threw 15.0 innings, allowed 15 hits, struck out 19 batters, and walked 13. His command was not great, and he got hit around when he was in the zone. That is not a good recipe for a relief pitcher.

New York is hoping Hudson will return to his 2024 form this year. But he will have to prove he is able to do it during spring training.

Hudson’s Spot on the MetsDevin Williams

GettyDevin Williams will be the closer at Citi Field in 2026.

Hudson is not a closer or a backend reliever. Williams and Luke Weaver will occupy a majority of those innings. Still, he has a chance to be a solid middle-inning reliever.

As it stands right now, there is room for Hudson in New York’s bullpen. As mentioned, Garrett was moved to the 60-day IL, while Dedniel Núñez received Tommy John surgery last summer. The one player Hudson will have to compete with is A.J. Minter.

Minter underwent lat surgery last season, and he has spent the entire offseason recovering. He is another left-handed reliever and has big-game experience, which comes in handy late in the year. The Mets will give Minter his chance in the big leagues, as long as he can stay healthy.

If Minter has a setback or two in spring training, Hudson’s spot in the bullpen will be solidified. Then it will be up to him to pitch well enough to stay in the MLB. Still, the Mets’ bullpen is very competitive and should be a strength for the team in 2026.
