Once the postseason ended last year, it seemed like the New York Yankees and veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt were going to go their separate ways. The Yankees have up-and-coming slugger Ben Rice to slot in at first base, so Goldschmidt wasn’t providing much to the roster.

But as the offseason continued on, Goldschmidt remained unsigned until the Yankees opted to sign him back a few weeks before spring training.

Why would the Yankees want him back? Why would Goldschmidt want to be back in Pinstripes? There are plenty of questions that weren’t answered at the time of signing.

“It’s an amazing organization, amazing guys in that clubhouse. I can’t say enough great things. The goal here is to win a championship, that’s what we all want to do,” Goldschmidt said.

It seems like these two sides are a match made in Heaven.

Goldshmidt plays the game and operates in the way that a typical New York Yankee would. He’s quiet when he needs to be, but vocal enough to be a leader.

While he might not see much playing time with Rice expected to take over at first base, the veteran should still be able to produce against left-handed pitching. Given the Yankees’ lack of organizational depth at first base, it’s not surprising to see Goldschmidt back in Pinstripes for another year.
