MILWAUKEE — As the Red Sox begin their latest road trip, the rainouts and doubleheaders they endured on this past homestand is already causing havoc with their pitching rotation.

Garrett Crochet starts Memorial Day afternoon, but the plans get murky after that.

“To be determined,” said Alex Cora when asked about his starter for Tuesday, the second game of the series at American Family Field. “We don’t know yet. We might haver a bullpen game. Let’s see how it goes today.”

The hope would be that Crochet, who was pulled after 85 pitches in his last outing as a precaution, can take the Red Sox deep in Monday’s starter and not place much of a burden on the relievers, who have been relied on heavily in recent days.

Another potential option for Tuesday is plugging in Richard Fitts. Fitts has been on the IL with a pectoral strain since mid-April and is tentatively set to make a rehab start for Worcester on Tuesday.

There remains the option of sliding Fitts into the rotation Tuesday and having him make the start for the Red Sox instead. Fitts made a start last week for the WooSox in which he threw 38 pitches. That would limit him to fewer than 60 pitches if he were to be plugged in Tuesday.

“We’ve been having conversations (about that),” said Cora. “We feel he’s healthy, which is great. I’ve been talking to (chief baseball officer Craig Breslow) during the day and we’ll decide during the day. But he might be in consideration.”

If the Sox were to lean on the bullpen to cover the nine innings, they’d do so without a long man, since lefty spot starter Sean Newcomb was designated for assignment over the weekend.
