FORT MYERS, Fla. — After an ill-fated two-year stint with the Red Sox that resulted in him pitching just 14 times while dealing with various injuries, Liam Hendriks is on the move.
Hendriks, who had his club option declined by Boston in the fall, has agreed to a minor league deal with the Twins, the club he debuted with from 2011-13. Hendriks, who still resides in Fort Myers, will likely report to Twins camp this week. FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported the news.
A three-time All-Star with the Athletics and White Sox, Hendriks signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Red Sox during spring training two years ago as he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He aimed to contribute in the second half of 2024 but suffered a setback with his arm and missed the entire year. In 2025, he began the year on the injured list with a nerve issue in his elbow, then made his long-awaited Red Sox debut on April 20 and pitched 14 times (logging a 6.59 ERA in 13.2 innings) before being shut down with an abdominal issue in late May. Hendriks then dealt with elbow trouble in the second half of the season that led to surgery — a right elbow ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release — in late September. The Red Sox declined Hendriks’ $12 million club option in November and instead paid him a $2 million buyout.
Hendriks recently threw for scouts in Florida and was impressive enough for Minnesota to take a flier. He joins Alex Bregman (Cubs), Rob Refsnyder (Mariners), Dustin May (Cardinals), Steven Matz (Rays) and Josh Winckowski (Blue Jays) as free agents to depart the Red Sox. Pitchers Lucas Giolito and Justin Wilson and first baseman Nathaniel Lowe remain unsigned.
