WASHINGTON (7News) — The Washington Nationals have signed starting pitcher Miles Mikolas, according to multiple reports.
The 37-year-old Mikolas is expected to be an innings eater for a Nationals rotation sorely in need of depth. The veteran starter has been with the St. Louis Cardinals since 2018, where he has been a solid and dependable presence in the team’s rotation, making at least 31 starts in each of those seasons except for one (2021).
The Nationals enter spring training in the early stages of a rebuild. The roster has plenty of questions, but no position group has as many unknowns as the team’s starting pitchers. The team traded their one proven starter, MacKenzie Gore, to the Rangers this offseason, leaving Cade Cavalli, Jake Irvin, Foster Griffin, Brad Lord, Mitchell Parker, and Josiah Gray battling for a spot in the starting rotation.
Mikolas went 8-11 for the Cardinals last season with a 4.84 ERA. He’s no longer considered a front-of-the-rotation guy, but he should provide the team with a much-needed veteran presence.
