Pitcher Miles Mikolas, a two-time National League All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals, found a new home in free agency Wednesday.

As first reported by Jake Mintz of Yahoo! Sports, Mikolas has agreed to a contract with the Washington Nationals. Mark Zuckerman of Nats Journal reports it’s a one-year contract.

Mikolas is 72-75 in 241 career MLB games (213 starts) with the Cardinals, Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres.
The Cardinals were hardly a threat to re-sign Mikolas, 37, amid an offseason of cost-cutting and roster retooling. But they were poised to rival the rebuilding Nationals for the first pick in the 2027 MLB Draft — a pick Mikolas hopes to help the Nats avoid attaining.
Mikolas began his career with the Padres and pitched mostly out of the bullpen from 2012-14 before leaving for Japan.
There, he reinvented himself, and returned to a robust domestic free agent market in the 2017-18 offseason. The Cardinals signed Mikolas and watched him lead the NL in victories (18) while pitching 200.2 innings in 2018.
Mikolas’ results have been more uneven since. He’s 50-65 with a 4.43 ERA in 172 games (171 starts) from 2019-25.
The Nationals hired 33-year-old manager Blake Butera after a disappointing 66-96 campaign in 2025. Not only will Mikolas be four years older than his manager, he’ll compete with four under-30 right-handers (Cade Cavalli, Josiah Gray, Jake Irvin, Brad Lord) for starts and innings in 2026.
