A key part of the Rangers’ 2023 World Series run is coming back to the club.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Rangers are reportedly bringing a World Series hero back into the fold.
Left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery has signed with the club, according to multiple reports, including MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. The Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant broke the news Wednesday morning, reporting a $1.25 million deal for Montgomery, who is still recovering from elbow surgery last year.
Montgomery’s return to Arlington is a bit bittersweet, given his injury and recent struggles, though if he recovers well, he has the upside to be a key piece of the Rangers’ rotation later in the season. Montgomery, a trade deadline addition for Texas in 2023, starred for the Rangers in their World Series run, especially in the Wild Card series against the Rays and the American League Championship Series against the Astros.
In his playoff start against Tampa Bay, Montgomery tossed seven scoreless innings and made an incredible diving play early in the Rangers’ series-clinching win. Against the Astros, he made two starts, throwing 14 innings and giving up only a pair of runs.
Rangers’ fans had hoped the club would sign Montgomery in the following free agency, but Montgomery, instead, signed a lucrative two-year deal with the Diamondbacks. Montgomery struggled mightily in Arizona with a 6.38 ERA in 117 innings in 2024. He got injured before the 2025 season and didn’t pitch last year.
In Texas he’ll be a depth piece in a strong rotation headlined by Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and the newly-acquired MacKenzie Gore. Jack Leiter, Jacob Latz, Kumar Rocker and Cody Bradford (also recovering from injury) are also expected to factor into the Rangers’ starting rotation.
The Rangers’ pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Surprise, Ariz., on Tuesday.
