LOS ANGELES, CA—On the eve of the Los Angeles Dodgers returning to Camelback Ranch for the official start of spring training, the team announced that they’ve agreed to a contract extension with veteran third baseman Max Muncy.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to terms with IF Max Muncy on a one-year contract extension for $10 million guaranteed, which includes a $7 million salary for the 2027 season and a $10 million club option for 2028.

Earlier this winter, the Dodgers exercised Muncy’s 1-year, $10 million club option for the 2026 season; however, the extension adds another year and a guaranteed $10 million for Muncy, which would include a $3 million buyout if the team declined his $10 million club option for the 2028 season.
With the retirement of Hall of Fame-bound left-hander Clayton Kershaw, Muncy is now the longest tenured Dodgers player, having been with the team since the 2018 season.
Muncy is already seventh on the Dodgers’ all-time home run list, just two shy of Steve Garvey for sixth. In eight seasons with L.A., he’s amassed 713 hits, 566 runs, and an .828 OPS.
His 16 postseason home runs lead the franchise, along with his 46 runs scored. He ranks among the franchise leaders in several categories, including third in RBI (37), sixth in doubles (9), second in plate appearances (328), and tied for third in extra-base hits (25).
Still, the 35-year-old Muncy is coming off a strong 2025 season where the left-handed slugger slashed .243/.376/.470 with a 137 wRC+ over 100 games, but did miss significant time with two separate injuries.
The Dodgers keeping Muncy for another possible three seasons, including the upcoming 2026 season, makes sense as the organization does not have many internal options moving forward.
The most logical internal option would be Alex Freeland, but the rookie only hit .190 with a 73 wRC+ in 97 plate appearances in his first stint at the MLB level.
This latest extension is the fourth separate one signed by Muncy, showing his willingness and desire to stay in Dodger Blue for the rest of his career.
