The former Oklahoma State Cowboys and Arlington, Texas native, told ESPN he has officially joined the Rangers’ ownership group. The franchise is majority-owned by Ray Davis.

At just 24 years old, Cunningham becomes one of the few active professional athletes to invest in a franchise from another major sport, a move similar to Patrick Mahomes purchasing a stake in the Kansas City Royals in 2020.

From Stillwater to ownership

Before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Cunningham authored one of the greatest single seasons in Oklahoma State history.

During his 2020-21 freshman campaign in Stillwater, he:

Became the first player in program history to earn Associated Press First-Team All-America honorsWas named a Consensus First-Team All-American, the first Cowboy since Bob KurlandWon National Freshman of the Year honors from multiple outletsAveraged 20.2 points per game to lead the Big 12Led OSU to nine wins over ranked teams and its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2009

His 40-point, 11-rebound performance at Oklahoma remains one of the most dominant outings in recent program history.

Living up to the hype in Detroit

Cunningham has done the same in the NBA.

Now an All-Star guard for Detroit, he is averaging 25.3 points and 9.6 assists while leading the Pistons to a 40-13 record entering the All-Star break. Last season, he averaged 26.1 points and 9.1 assists, finishing seventh in MVP voting.

Detroit reached the 40-win mark this week with a 113-95 victory over Toronto, cementing Cunningham’s status as one of the Eastern Conference’s premier players.

A hometown investment

Cunningham grew up in Arlington, Texas and attended Bowie High School before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida, where he became the 2020 Naismith High School Player of the Year.

For Oklahoma State fans, it’s another milestone in the remarkable rise of a Cowboy who continues to expand his influence far beyond the basketball court.
