The beginning of spring training marks the wind-down of what many view as an underwhelming offseason for the Giants.
Last season’s acquisitions of Willy Adames in free agency and Rafael Devers via trade were splash hits for the Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey. This year’s round of additions does not meet the same level of hype, leaving some fans frustrated.
Posey, in an interview with KNBR’s “Murph and Markus,” acknowledged the fans’ concerns.
“I think from a fan’s perspective, they want us to go out and sign every marquee free agent. That sounds great in theory, but that’s not a reality,” Posey explained. “We’re happy with the group that we have and certainly feel that we’ve got the talent on this team to go out and win a lot of ball games.”
The Giants feel very confident in the talent level of their team. They felt similarly about last season’s roster, but the on-field product left a lot to be desired, leading to a coaching change.
The only thing that matters at this point is seeing the result on the field.
“That’s what makes sports great,” Posey said. “And our sport I think, moreso than any other, people love numbers and projections. But ultimately, until we step out on that field and see how things play out, nobody really knows.”
Posey and the Giants added centerfielder Harrison Bader, second baseman Luis Arráez and pitchers Tyler Mahle and Adrian Houser, most notably.
Many of the signings drew criticism as being underwhelming, but Posey strongly defended the signings.
“I think they’re all great big leaguers,” Posey said. “You don’t stay in the league as long as they have without being great big leaguers. So, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.
“We feel like we really got better defensively with Harrison in center; he made some big strides offensively. Having talked to him, I think there’s some staying power there.
“Luis Arráez, three batting titles by age 28. We know that he’s got his work to do at second base. I was watching him out [at spring training] … with Ron Washington, so he’s already getting all of that off the ground and running.”
Posey had high praise for Houser’s offseason work in making tweaks to his pitching. He also noted Mahle’s 2025 season was off to a hot start before being hit with injuries.
As Posey noted, the success of an offseason isn’t easily discernible until the team steps out onto the diamond.
