Could former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos find a new home with the Texas Rangers?
Rangers insider Evan Grant was asked that exact question on his Wednesday afternoon livestream from Surprise, Ariz., the Rangers’ spring training home.
Grant’s answer came before the Phillies released Castellanos on Wednesday afternoon and details emerged about an incident where he brought a beer into the dugout after being benched for a defensive replacement during a game against the Marlins last season.
Regardless, here’s what Grant had to say about Castellanos potential fit with the Rangers:
Rangers
Grant: “Could he end up with the Rangers? I suppose, but I don’t think there’s a great fit. The Rangers right now, as I just mentioned with Alejandro Osuna, they’ve got more outfielders than they, probably, will carry on the Opening Day roster.
If the Rangers were to have an injury in spring training to Evan Carter, or Brandon Nimmo or Wyatt Langford, certainly the team would have to be flexible and potentially look at options like Castellanos, but at this point in time, I don’t see it being a fit.
The one good thing about Castellanos, if the Phillies do release him, is that the Rangers would only have to pay the major league minimum if they signed him. So it certainly would fit in the in the financial constraints, but I think he’s viewed mostly as a DH at this point in time, and I suppose he could be a fill-in for Joc Peterson if that doesn’t go well, but I don’t think that’s the team’s top priority right now.
I think if there are some arms still out there that can be had for bargain basement prices, I think that’s where the Rangers are more centered. Though I will acknowledge we had mentioned the possibility of Austin Hays this offseason. We mentioned the possibility of Miguel Andujar. Both of them have signed. The Rangers would like a right-handed bat at some point in time.
So, yeah, I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth. I think anything is possible. I just haven’t heard Castellanos’s name mentioned in the past couple of days.”
