Could Gold Glove first baseman Christian Walker play left field to give the Astros more flexibility?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Houston Astros entered spring training with a surplus of infield talent — and at least one unconventional idea has emerged as a possible solution.

Would Gold Glove first baseman Christian Walker, long established at first base, be opposed to seeing some time in left field as the Astros look for ways to keep multiple productive bats in the lineup?

The idea was raised by KHOU 11 baseball analyst Jeremy Booth, who suggested Walker’s prior outfield experience could give Houston flexibility as it sorts through a crowded infield picture – which includes Isaac Paredes, an All-Star in 2025.

Walker did not dismiss the possibility when asked by KHOU 11’s Jason Bristol on Thursday.

“I’ve played left field in the past,” Walker said. “Whatever Joe (Espada) needs, whatever this team needs — that’s what I’m willing to do.”

Before being asked, though, Walker made clear his primary goal remains unchanged.

“My goal is to play every day, be the everyday first baseman,” he said.

Houston’s roster construction has created internal competition across the infield, with multiple players capable of handling everyday roles. General manager Dana Brown said on Wednesday the organization views that depth as a strength.

“There’s nothing wrong with having depth, and the competition is welcome,” Brown said. “We welcome the competition.”

Whether that solution ultimately includes Walker spending time in left field remains unclear. The Astros have not indicated publicly that such a move is under consideration, though Bristol will ask.

For now, Walker is focused on preparing for the season, wherever he fits.

“I’m here to win a World Series,” he said.
