A Slovak fugitive who spent 16 years evading capture was arrested by police on Wednesday at the Winter Olympics in Italy.
The 44-year-old man, who was not named by police, had been wanted by Italian authorities since 2010 when he is reported to have committed a series of thefts, according to the Associated Press.
The man checked into a campsite near Milan, where the Olympics are being hosted, planning to watch his native Slovakian men’s ice hockey team play in the Winter Olympics on Wednesday. However, he was arrested by the Carabinieri – Italy’s police – following an automatic notification from the campsite upon his check-in.
He was transported to San Vittore prison in Milan, where he will serve a pending sentence of 11 months and seven days, authorities said.
The man did not see Slovakia’s 4-1 opening game win over Finland on Wednesday at Santagiulia Arena. Slovakia improved to 2-0 in Olympic play with a 3-2 win over Italy on Friday.
Slovakia will next play against Sweden on Saturday at 6:10 a.m. EST.
