New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez
The New York Yankees are set to begin spring training and their quest for another World Series win is about to continue.
During the MLB offseason, the Yankees opted to take a quiet approach. They didn’t make any blockbuster outside moves, although they were able to retain star outfielder Cody Bellinger on a five-year, $162.5 million contract despite plenty of other teams having interest in stealing him away.
Instead of pursuing more star power, New York decided to keep its current roster together. Brian Cashman has received some criticism for that strategy, but no one can truly make any final judgement until after the 2026 season concludes.
With that being said, there is still one major question that needs to be figured out before the start of the year. Jasson Dominguez appears to be headed for another season of having an inconsistent role, which has led to trade rumors about him.
Keeping that in mind, Cashman has now revealed a very telling sign about Dominguez’s future.
Brian Cashman Dishes Clear Hint About Jasson Dominguez’s Future With Yankees
As shared by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Cashman made it fairly clear that Dominguez will not be starting the season at the Major League level.
“I would concede it’s in his best interest to be getting everyday reps,” Cashman said. “We’ll just have to wait and see how the spring shakes out, who’s standing and then we’ll make the appropriate decisions when we have our meetings close to the end of camp.”
Those comments from Cashman are quite telling. It’s clear that Dominguez does not have a pathway to everyday playing time with the Yankees at the Major League level. That role would have to come in the minor leagues.
Dominguez is headed towards starting off the 2026 season in Triple-A. He could work his way back up to New York, but there is no clear role for him.
Jasson Dominguez Will Continue to Be Linked to Trade Rumors
What does this mean for Dominguez’s future with the Yankees? Quite simply, his name is going to continue swirling in the MLB rumor mill.
Just a couple of short years ago, Dominguez was one of the top up-and-coming young players in baseball. He was expected to become a star for New York.
Assuming the Yankees don’t make other moves that open up an everyday role for him, Dominguez could be included in trade talks. New York could consider pursuing a starting pitcher before the trade deadline or another position. If the team chooses to go for a star-caliber player, Dominguez could be the centerpiece of a trade.
It’s impossible to predict the future, but Dominguez has a very murky future with the Yankees. Things could change, but it seems very possible that a trade away from New York could be in the cards for him down the road.
