The Chicago Cubs have signed RHP Shelby Miller to a multi-year deal, allowing him to rehab from Tommy John and join the bullpen next season.
According to reports, the Chicago Cubs are making another significant addition to their pitching depth. Per MLB insider Robert Murray, the Cubs and RHP Shelby Miller are nearing a multi-year, major-league deal.
Miller was spectacular in 37 appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2025, pitching to a 1.98 ERA. He was traded with LHP Jordan Montgomery to the Milwaukee Brewers last season, where he made only 11 appearances before requiring Tommy John surgery. He’ll use majority, if not all, of 2026 to rehab with plans of joining the bullpen in 2027.
Miller showcases a lot of things that the Cubs surely like. For starters, he changed up his approach in 2025. After a mediocre-at-best 2024 season, Miller started using his splitter more and his sweeper less. In 2025, he threw his fastball/splitter combo roughly 90% of the time, mixing in the occasional sweeper. A year of rehab, working with Tyler Zombro, could make Shelby Miller the Cubs’ Weapon X in 2027.
Miller was drafted in the first round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He was later traded to the Atlanta Braves for former Cub Jason Heyward. Then, he was flipped to Arizona for Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair, and current Cub Dansby Swanson. Miller also had a brief stint with the Cubs in 2021, but was released after three rough appearances. Now, Miller will get a chance again with the Cubs in 2027 while joining the team to rehab.
