Minnesota Twins honor Iowa Lakes baseball team after deadly crash
ANCHOR SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE FEBRUARY 1ST. RIGHT NOW IN IOWA, COMMUNITY IS STILL REELING AFTER A SHOCKING ACCIDENT THIS WEEK. A BUS CARRYING MEMBERS OF THE IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM OVERTURNED ON WEDNESDAY. 19 YEAR OLD CARTER JOHNSON WAS KILLED IN THE CRASH. 32 OTHER PEOPLE ON THE BUS WERE INJURED, INCLUDING SEVERAL WHO WERE HOSPITALIZED. TONIGHT, THE LIGHTS AT LINDBERGH FIELD IN ESTHERVILLE, WHERE THE LAKERS PLAY THEIR HOME GAMES, WERE TURNED ON TO HONOR JOHNSON AND THE ENTIRE IOWA LAKES BASEBALL TEAM. COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHERED TO STAND TOGETHER IN QUIET REFLECTION AND SUPPORT, CARTER’S FATHER SAYS HE’S REMEMBERING HIS SON AS THE GREATEST PERSON HE’S EVER KNOWN. KCCI ABIGAIL CURTAIN SPOKE WITH HIM ABOUT HOW HIS SON’S LEGACY WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE ON. ABIGAIL, THERE’S A LOT TO KNOW ABOUT CARTER JOHNSON. FOR STARTERS, HE WAS NICKNAMED TATER AFTER HIS FATHER HEARD A BASEBALL ANNOUNCER CALL A HOME RUN A TATER ON THE DAY HE WAS BORN. HE LOVED BASEBALL AND HIS FAMILY. HE WAS STRONG IN HIS CHRISTIAN FAITH. AND IT’S THESE FACTS THAT CARTER’S FATHER, JEFF JOHNSON, WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW THE MOST. DESPITE BEING HIS SON, JEFF JOHNSON SAYS CARTER WAS MORE LIKE HIS TWIN BROTHER, FACETIMING, TEXTING AND MAKING ONE ANOTHER LAUGH EVERY DAY. BUT WHEN JOHNSON RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM ONE OF HIS SON’S TEAMMATES INFORMING HIM OF THE ACCIDENT, HIS WORLD STOPPED. HE SAID, I’M NOT SURE WHAT’S GOING ON, BUT THEY HAVE WHITE BLANKETS OVER HIM, AND I JUST TOLD MY WIFE, I KNOW HE’S HE’S GONE. CARTER WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. HE WAS JUST 19 YEARS OLD. BUT HIS FATHER SAYS HE MADE EVERY DAY OF THOSE 19 YEARS COUNT. HE HAD THE MOST INFECTIOUS PERSONALITY. HE HE HE HE LOVED FIERCE. HE WORKED SO HARD AT ANYTHING. ANYTHING HE WANTED. HE WORKED SO HARD. NOBODY OUTWORKED HIM. DOESN’T MEAN HE WAS ALWAYS THE BEST, BUT NOBODY OUTWORKED HIM. HE JUST LIVED LIFE TO THE FULLEST. AND THAT LEGACY IS CONTINUING ON CAMPUS, SPECIFICALLY THROUGH HIS FAITH. CARTER WAS A DEDICATED CHRISTIAN AND IS ULTIMATELY INSPIRING THE IOWA LAKES STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT OF OF IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE REACHED OUT AGAIN, WHICH HE HAS MULTIPLE TIMES, AND HE SAID, JEFF, IF YOU COULD SEE WHAT’S GOING ON HERE IN THIS COMMUNITY, AND THIS CAMPUS, YOU’D BE SHOCKED. AND I GO, WHAT DO YOU MEAN? AND HE SAID, THERE ARE PEOPLE RUNNING TO GIVE THEIR LIVES TO JESUS. CARTER WAS SUCH AN EXAMPLE, A LEGACY THAT JEFF SAYS MAKES HIM FEEL, QUOTE, UNWORTHY OF BEING CARTER’S DAD. BUT THAT’S HIS HOPE THAT CARTER ISN’T DEFINED BY THE WAY HE DIED. THAT WASN’T HIM. Friday night the Minnesota Twins baseball team paid tribute to the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball player who was killed in a crash earlier this week. Two of the occupants in the bus were ejected and trapped under the vehicle when it stopped rolling.First responders from four different counties responded to the crash, including Calhoun, Webster, Sac, and Pocahontas counties.
