Bryce Eldridge is the guy who can make a difference for the San Francisco Giants this season.

They didn’t make a ton of offseason moves, particularly in the batting lineup. Eldridge, who barely made his debut a season ago, will be like the addition.

The slugging lefty hitter, who can either play first base or DH depending on where Rafael Devers is, has a potent swing.

It may be even more powerful than fans think. ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle compared him to one of the most prodigious sluggers of all time.

“Not to put too much of an onus on the kid, but he does look like a lefty-hitting version of the young Mark McGwire, and if he were to have a McGwire-like rookie season, it would go a long way toward curing any lingering Giants offensive ills,” Doolittle writes.

McGwire is one of the most immense power-hitter comparisons you could give to a player.

Intriguingly, Doolittle didn’t get stuck comparing two hitters that bat from the same side. McGwire, of course, hit right handed. Eldridge is lefty.

But it’s in the raw power where Doolittle sees overlap. McGwire could hit the ball a mile. So can Eldridge.

Of course, McGwire may not have done his home run hitting fully clean. But he had the power his whole baseball life, even if he eventually gave it an artificial boost.

Eldridge can hit his home runs without needing such help. And if he starts crushing the ball out of the ballpark, that’ll go a long way toward making the Giants better.
