The San Diego Padres signed former Colorado Rockies pitcher German Marquez to a one-year deal.

Marquez is a 10-year veteran who has started 200 games in the major leagues.

From 2017-2022, Marquez was one of the most durable arms in the game of baseball.

The right-handed pitcher underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 and has battled various arm issues since. The Padres are hoping that his arm is back in shape.

Márquez, 30, looks to bounce back from a rough first year back from Tommy John surgery and will do it in a far more favorable environment. Not long ago, he was one of game’s most durable starters.

The Padres added Griffin Canning this week as well, as they attempt to boost the bottom half of the rotation.

Joe Musgrove and Michael King are coming off injuries, so it would be wise to add more veteran arms. The Padres need depth, and we should expect a few more signings or trades like this. Marquez, on a one-year deal, is a worthwhile gamble for the Padres.

The details of the signing of Marquez are not known yet. It looks like a 40-man spot will need to be cleared for him.

His deal should come with a major league contract.
