The New York Mets seem to be adamant about adding catcher depth to their spring training roster.
On Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that the Mets have claimed Dodgers catcher Ben Rortvedt off waivers. New York now has four catchers on its 40-man roster. DiComo also indicates that Rortvedt will serve as the 72nd player in the Mets organization who is at Port St. Lucie. The corresponding move is transferring Dedniel Nunez to the 60-Day IL.

Mets Make More Roster Moves as Spring Training Games Approach
Official spring training games across MLB will start getting underway in a week, so teams are loading up on bodies to get them through the exhibition games.
Claiming Ben Rortvedt is a good organizational depth piece move. He will get a 2025 World Series ring for his services with the Dodgers last season, but he appeared in just 18 games last year with Los Angeles and hit .224 with one home run. He also spent time with the New York Yankees in 2023, but posted a not-so-attractive .118 batting average over 68 at-bats in Pinstripes.

Rortvedt has bounced around a lot this season in the DFA limbo, so it’s unclear if he will be on the team’s Opening Day roster or start the season in the minors. New York has Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens as top options behind the dish, but if they go down with injury, Rortvedt could step up in a backup role if healthy.
As for Dedniel Nunez, he posted a 2.31 ERA over 35 innings out of the Mets’ bullpen in 2024, but has had trouble staying healthy ever since.

Other Mets Spring Training News
All of the Mets players are starting to report for spring camp. The big news out of camp is that Francisco Lindor is dealing with a hamate bone injury. It’s a tough blow for Lindor, but he’s optimistic that he will be ready for Opening Day.
Most of the news has been little organizational moves like claiming Ben Rortvedt.
The Mets are entering the 2026 regular season with high expectations after a very successful offseason of a lot of new faces.
Spring training will be a good chance for Mets fans to get familiar and acclimated to all the new additions.
