KEEP AN EYE ON

The Marlins moved both RHP Edward Cabrera and LHP Ryan Weathers and signed RHP Chris Paddack — originally a Marlin traded to the Padres for RHP Fernando Rodney — to a one-year deal to compete for a spot in the back end of a rotation that’s hoping to see former NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara return to form. Alcantara had a 5.36 ERA in his first year back from Tommy John surgery.
The Marlins have a bit of a San Diego vibe going. In addition to Paddack, 2B Xavier Edwards, 3B Graham Pauley, OFs Jakob Marsee and Owen Caissie and RHPs Adam Mazur and Lake Bachar are former Padres prospects and OF Kyle Stowers, an All-Star last year, is an El Cajon native.
The big offseason addition was RHP Pete Fairbanks, who signed a year-year, $13 million deal to serve as the Marlins’ closer. Fairbanks, 32, figures to be among the Marlins’ trade chips if they are not in contention. He has 90 saves and a 3.19 ERA in parts of seven years in the majors.
