Sherman says Royals ‘don’t think we’re that far away’ from stadium deal

  • February 16, 2026

SURPRISE, Ariz. (KCTV) – Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman indicated Monday belief that the franchise is nearing a stadium deal.

Speaking to reporters in Surprise, Arizona, as the Royals Spring Training is underway, Sherman claimed the team hasn’t settled anywhere yet, but said “I don’t think we’re that far away.”

“When the Chiefs made this announcement, there was a whole new wave of enthusiasm,” Sherman said after being asked about Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas’ renewed support for a ballpark at Washington Square Park near Union Station. “We’re still evaluating Kansas, and we’re still evaluating multiple locations in Missouri, but I do appreciate the effort that’s being put forth, not only by the Mayor, but by the government.”

Sherman called the process for a stadium deal complicated, as the Royals attempt to find a home when their lease expires at Kauffman Stadium.

“I think it’s kind of time to get on with it,” Sherman admitted. “I know our fans have stated deal fatigue, whatever, and we’ve got that, too.

“But it’s just a generational decision.”

In January, Clay County officials announced that the Royals missed a deadline to be on the ballot in April. Days before, the Royals said the Aspiria campus at 119th Street and Nall in Overland Park, Kansas, was no longer an option.

The Royals play their first Spring Training game on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2:05 p.m. CT.
