Yelich came to close to being out on his 3-run homer, here’s his story

Christian Yelich came to close to being out on his 3-run homer against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday May 22, 2025, during an 8-5 Brewers win.

Going up against one of the game’s best starters, it was the Milwaukee Brewers‘ arms that won the day.

Staked to an early lead courtesy of Jackson Chourio’s leadoff home run, the combination of Chad Patrick, DL Hall, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill kept the Boston Red Sox at bay nearly all afternoon for a 3-2 win at American Family Field on May 26.

Milwaukee faced a tall task in the form of 6-foot-6 Boston left-hander Garrett Crochet, who is third in Major League Baseball in strikeouts and seventh in earned run average. But Chourio hit the first pitch of the game from Crochet out of the park and a run-scoring double from Andruw Monasterio in the fifth proved to be pivotal.

Eric Haase pushed the Brewers’ lead to two with a bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the eighth that ultimately proved vital.

Hall followed Patrick and threw 2â…“ innings in his season debut after recovering from a left lat strain before handing the ball off to Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill, who recorded the final five outs.

Megill’s ninth inning was dicey. Pitching for the sixth time in the last nine days, Megill required 34 pitches, gave up a run and had to escape a bases-loaded jam by getting Connor Wong to fly out to right to record the save.

Bottom of the order delivers

You never know what you’re going to see at the ballpark on any given day. In this case, that means the Brewers’ generally light-hitting bottom of the order connects on consecutive doubles off one of the best starters in the game.

It began with a Joey Ortiz hustle double to lead off the bottom of the fifth, sliding into second ahead of the throw from Kristian Campbell, then continued when Monasterio, after two failed bunt attempts, snuck a grounder inside the third-base line for another two-bagger that put the Brewers up, 2-0.

Crochet wound up striking out 11 Brewers over 6 2/3 innings but nevertheless picked up his fourth loss of the season.

More of the same from Chad Patrick

Yet again, Chad Patrick delivered quality for the Brewers. But he also once again was unable to get out of the fifth inning.

With the bullpen still overworked, Patrick got through 4 2/3 innings without allowing a run before a Jarren Duran double to right ended his afternoon. With Patrick at 79 pitches and the dangerous Rafael Devers due up for a third at-bat against the right-hander, Pat Murphy played the matchup and brought in the southpaw DL Hall. Hall got Devers to ground out to first to end the frame with the Brewers still ahead.

Patrick has still yet to allow more than three earned runs in any of his 11 starts, but the flip side is he has only gone five-plus innings five times.

Jackson Chourio ambushes the first pitch

Garrett Crochet has been as advertised for the Red Sox after they gave up a haul to get him from the White Sox this winter, pitching to a 1.98 ERA entering the day while sitting fifth in the American League in strikeouts. If you’re going to hit him, you might need to do it early.

Jackson Chourio took that to heart, swinging at the first pitch of the game from the left-hander and crushing it 410 feet to left-center, up and over the Brewers bullpen for a solo homer. It was Chourio’s first career leadoff homer, as well as the Brewers’ first this year.
