According to the latest MLB odds, I lean toward taking the over on the Athletics’ win total of 75.5 for the 2026 season.
Given the combination of a young lineup and an underwhelming pitching staff while playing in a minor-league ballpark, there is too much variance for the Athletics’ season to feel confident in a win total. They profile as a team better suited to target a ceiling outcome, such as their +400 odds to make the playoffs.
In their first season in Sacramento, the Athletics went 76-86 to post their best record since 2021. They ranked 12th in total runs scored, but their pitching staff also gave up the fourth-most runs in baseball.
It’s easy to get excited about the potential of the lineup, especially after Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson finished one-two in the AL Rookie of the Year race. The A’s have seven projected starters who are 28 or younger, indicating a solid foundational core for a team that hopes to move to Las Vegas by the end of the decade.
Kurtz was sensational as a power-hitting first baseman in his rookie campaign. He posted a wRC+ of 170 with 36 home runs and 86 RBIs. He’s my favorite long-shot prediction in the 2026 MLB RBI leader odds.
According to RosterResource at FanGraphs, the Athletics rank sixth among all American League teams in projected offensive WAR for the upcoming season. The problem is that two of their division rivals (the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros) rank ahead of them.
In the end, I’m not sure the A’s have the pitching staff to survive seven months in the AL West. Most projections have them as a mid-70s win team, but they will certainly be an enjoyable one to watch in 2026.
