When Deion Sanders was a kid growing up in Fort Myers, Florida, the Kansas City Royals played their Spring Training games in the city at Terry Park, not far from Sanders’ childhood home. When he was in third grade, Sanders would skip class to hang around the ballpark, collecting home run balls, shagging practice balls for the players, and begging for cracked bats. Then, he would take the merch to the bleachers and sell his treasures like a popcorn vendor. “That was my hustle,” Sanders said.
As Nike rolls out a retro return of Sanders’ Diamond Turf 2 signature shoe, that story is making its way to a white and blue Kansas City Royals colorway. Thanks to photos of the Prime Time childhood colorway sent to us by Sole Retriever friend and Nike DNA employee Robbie Williams, we’ve got an early look at the pair, complete with premium textured white leather and smooth blue nubuck on the upper, more blue on the forefoot strap, a white Swoosh in the middle, and cream accents on the midsole.
During his childhood hanging around Terry Park, Sanders became friends with Royals Manager Dick Howser, who eventually drafted Sanders to Major League Baseball out of high school. Sanders turned down the deal after Howser told him that the team would still be there to draft him after college, so Deion went to Howser’s alma mater, Florida State, to try his hand at football. The rest is history, but as we all know, Deion would eventually return to the big leagues as a two-sport athlete, becoming the only person to ever play in an NFL and MLB game in the same day.
