NORTH PORT – Chris Sale is diving headfirst into spring training, eager to shake off last year’s performance.

“I really didn’t like how my Spring Training went and I didn’t like how I started the season,” said Sale. He emphasized being ready from day one, skipping bullpens to jump straight into live batting practice.

This season brings changes for Sale and his team. Walt Weiss, now the manager, praised Sale’s influence on young players, calling him an exemplary figure in the camp.

“Its tough to think of a big leaguer that I’ve been around that’s better than him,” said Weiss.

A new rule is also in play: the automated ball-strike challenge system. However, Sale, the 2024 Cy Young Award winner, isn’t a fan.

“I will never challenge a pitch,” said Sale. He believes it’s the umpire’s job and prefers to focus on pitching.

At 36, Sale is in the final year of his contract and hopes to retire as an Atlanta Brave.

“I like being here you know these guys obviously gave me a shot,” said Sale. He appreciates the support he’s received and enjoys being part of the team.
