The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking for ways to finish rounding out their team ahead of the MLB regular season getting underway. While they have made strides to advance their pitching by signing Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, they could still look to fill out the back of their rotation more.
With MLB Spring Training underway, there aren’t many notable names left on the free agent market. Yet, there is one pitcher that makes sense for the Blue Jays to sign, or in this case re-sign, and that is Max Scherzer.

Toronto Blue Jays Closing In On Signing Max Scherzer in MLB Free Agency
The Blue Jays’ rotation currently includes Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and Cody Ponce. However, the team is facing pitching depth challenges due to injuries. Shane Bieber is expected to start the season on the injured list with forearm soreness, and Bowden Francis will miss the entire year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Depth becomes something that Toronto must make a priority to feel secure about the team before they enter the season. This is leading to them looking intensely at Scherzer.
Enough so to where it is being reported that the Blue Jays’ pursuit of Max Scherzer has “gotten more serious” over the past week.

The decision to bring Scherzer back makes sense for the Blue Jays. Despite Scherzer being 41 years old, he showed last season he could provide value to the team as he had a 5.19 ERA in 17 regular-season starts. His true value came in the postseason as his playoff ERA was 3.77. Despite a difficult regular season marred by injuries, his playoff resilience suggests he could still be a valuable contributor.
For a team like the Blue Jays, who have championship aspirations, bringing back a player like Max Scherzer who is already familiar with the team, coaching, and ballpark at this point in the offseason would prove to be highly beneficial for them.
