The Detroit Tigers schedule in spring training is underway with their opening game, and Kevin McGonigle, their top prospect, was in the lineup for his debut.

McGonigle, the consensus No. 2 prospect in baseball, batted second and played shortstop against the New York Yankees in Tampa, Florida, at George M. Steinbrenner Field, a 20-3 Tigers loss.
McGonigle, who bats left-handed, lined a 1-1 single to left field on a 100.5 mph four-seam fastball in the first inning, and scored on an error two batters later. He had a soft lineout to right field in his second plate appearance. He was pinch-hit for in the fifth inning.

McGonigle, 21, finished the 2025 season at Double-A Erie, but still has a shot to make the Opening Day roster, though he’s more likely to start the season in Triple-A Toledo.

Max Clark, the Tigers’ No. 2 prospect and a top-10 prospect in MLB, entered for McGonigle in the fifth, and went 1-for-3 with an infield single to the pitcher. He played center field.

McGonigle finishes 1-for-2 in the Tigers’ spring training opener, exiting with the Tigers trailing 8-2 to the Yankees. McGonigle was pinch-hit for in the fifth inning.

Max Clark pops out in first at-bat for Tigers
Clark, the Tigers’ No. 2 prospect and a consensus top-10 prospect in baseball, pinch-hit for McGonigle and faced right-hander Fernando Cruz. Clark, a left-handed hitter, popped out on a slider to third base. Clark then played center field.
Clark beat out an infield single to the pitcher in the seventh, then struck out swinging to end the game.
Kevin McGonigle lines out in second at-bat
Third inning: After Corey Julks pulled a leadoff home run inside the left field pole to cut the Tigers’ deficit to 3-2, Jahmai Jones walked, setting up McGonigle with no outs. McGonigle hit a soft lineout to Aaron Judge in right field on a 1-2 count on the fifth pitch of the at-bat. The pitch was a 91 mph changeup thrown low and on the edge of the strike zone by 6-foot-7 right-hander Carlos Lagrange. The exit velocity off the bat was a below-average 84.4 mph and traveled 290 feet.

First inning: McGonigle, batting behind leadoff man Jahmai Jones, took a ball up, fouled a pitch out of play, then lined a 1-1 single to left field on a 100.5 mph four-seam fastball in the strike zone from Lagrange.

The pitch was thrown low on the outer-half. The exit velocity off the bat was 104.5 mph. Lagrange, like McGonigle, finished the 2025 season in Double-A.
McGonigle moved to second on a Gleyber Torres single, and scored on a Colt Keith strikeout on a pitch in the dirt and error on catcher Ali Sánchez, whose throw to third sailed wide behind McGonigle and into left field.
