The Dodgers on Monday beat the Guardians in Cleveland in their 54th game of the season, meaning the season is officially one-third complete.
As we’ve done nearly every season dating back to 2009, let’s take a look at the season in 54-game chunks. Over the course of the season, it’s a decent way to show which players were consistent, which ones had hot and cold streaks, or who was healthy and who wasn’t.
The first 54 games gives us a chance to compare this year to the starts of other recent seasons. The Dodgers, at 33-21, are on pace for 99 wins, which is right in line with other recent starts.

By adjusted weighted runs created, relative to the league, the year’s Dodgers offense is its best since 2015, at least in the first 54 games of the season. The pitching, on the other hand, is missing several key pieces, and the ERA- (below 100 is good) is slightly below average, and the second-worst for the Dodgers through 54 games dating back to 2014.
Let’s take a look at the individual players, starting with the backstops.

Will Smith is off to a tremendous start to the season. This position will be something to track all season, and not just to see how Smith fares down the stretch, but how Dalton Rushing adjusts to the majors now that he’s nearly two weeks into his big league career.

Ohtani leads the majors in home runs and runs scored, and his 57 runs are the most by a Dodger through 54 games since Wee Willie Keeler in 1901.
Mookie Betts has been up and down offensively after dealing with a stomach ailment that caused him to lose 20 pounds in late March, but he’s still above average offensively while playing a pretty good shortstop. Freddie Freeman missed 12 games already, but has been incredible when playing.
The trouble spots are Max Muncy, who hasn’t hit for much power at all and has struggled defensively at third base, and Michael Conforto, who has not had the results of someone who should have started 46 times in the first 54 games.
Now, the pitching staff.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto is pitching like a Cy Young Award candidate, just magnificent so far with a sub-2.00 ERA and solid periphererals, and has almost half (seven) of the team’s total quality starts (15). Yamamoto is the ace of a staff desperately in need of a leader, given the 27 combined innings from Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow to date.
I didn’t split any pitchers into their starting and relief work, but rather lumped their total stats into the group with which they most aligned. So the totals for the starters and relievers are not actual splits, but rather the totals for each group of players.
Four different relievers are on pace for 70 appearances, and Kirby Yates was on the same pace before landing on the injured list. The bullpen has been quite busy.

Chris Stratton is the only pitcher who’s been active with the Dodgers who hasn’t yet pitched for them. But they did have 27 different pitchers in the first 54 games of the season.
Let’s reconvene at the end of July, and we can compare all these numbers to the next 54 games.
