The news on injured Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly was no news Monday, Feb. 23, as the team prepared to face the Cleveland Guardians in spring training at Goodyear Ballpark.

Manager Torey Lovullo said before the game that he didn’t yet have the results of Kelly’s MRI for back tightness.

“We are still getting some information together and he’s feeling good, I will say that,” Lovullo said. “We’re going to remain as hopeful as possible.”

Lovullo said he’s optimistic about Kelly maintaining good health and that Kelly works hard to stay in shape. Nothing has changed for the moment with regard to Kelly’s status as the Opening Day starting pitcher for Arizona.

The MRI results have been hard to come by quickly, Lovullo said, because Kelly was examined over the weekend and more analysis was needed.

Lovullo said Kelly spoke up at the right time to inform the Diamondbacks that he wasn’t right.

Thompson OK after being hit by batted ball

Lovullo said right-hander Ryan Thompson is fine after being struck in the back of the shoulder with a hard comebacker during his workout Feb. 22.

Kristian Robinson, the teammate who hit the ball, has apologized to Thompson more than once.

“I saw him in the training room (Monday), he looks good,” Lovullo said.

USA hockey happiness

Lovullo was at Salt River Fields to watch the U.S. hockey team play Canada for the Olympic gold medal early Sunday morning. He and coaches were in a staff meeting as the game went into overtime in Italy.

Lovullo listened for an eruption of noise from the clubhouse. If it was small, he knew the Canadians had won, if louder, it was an American victory.

“There was an absolute eruption and I ended the meeting right there on the spot,” Lovullo said. “I said let’s go celebrate with the rest of the guys right now.”
