The 2026 MLB season is right around the corner and spring training has already begun. For the Toronto Blue Jays, it’s an opportunity to take the final step and win a World Series.
Last season, the Blue Jays were able to win the American League and pushed the Los Angeles Dodgers to seven games in the World Series. Unfortunately, they came up just short of winning it all. That has left them with extra motivation for this season.
While all eyes are on spring training and the team is preparing to begin the year, there are still trade rumors swirling around. Toronto has been involved in some of those rumor mill discussions.
One name to keep an eye on as a potential trade candidate before the regular season arrives is none other than starting pitcher Jose Berrios.
Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins Could Come Together on a Jose Berrios Trade
As the rumors keeping on churning, one suggested trade idea would see the Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins work out a deal involving Berrios.
FanSided’s Mark Powell came up with the trade pitch. He thinks that moving on from Berrios would be the right move for Toronto and explained why Berrios would be the right fit for the Twins.
“Jose Berrios stayed far away from the Blue Jays when his teammates were competing for a World Series title. He has since apologized for his absence, but that doesn’t make it right. Berrios isn’t necessary in the Jays rotation, and a simple look at his numbers the last few years shouts inconsistency,” Powell wrote.
“This is where the Twins come in. Berrios was drafted by Minnesota, and while they aren’t ones to spend with this ownership group, he also has just one year left on his contract. If the Blue Jays are willing to part with a problem, Minnesota is an ideal destination since Pablo Lopez is out long term and Joe Ryan suffered a back injury. The Twins need arms, even though they’re cheap.”
What Does Jose Berrios Bring to the Mound?
At 31 years of age, Berrios has had an up-and-down MLB career. In 2023 and 2024, he was much better than he was last season.
Berrios made 30 starts and appeared in 31 games during the 2025 campaign. He compiled a 9-5 record to go along with a 4.17 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, a 2.5 K/BB ratio, and 166 innings pitched. Back in 2024, he compiled a 16-11 record, a 3.60 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, a 2.8 K/BB ratio, and 192.1 innings of work completed in 32 starts.
For a team like the Twins, Berrios would bring much-needed depth. He’s capable of putting together solid innings. That’s what Minnesota needs.
Powell said it perfectly when it comes to the Blue Jays’ side of the deal. Toronto simply doesn’t need him in its rotation.
It will be interesting to see what the Blue Jays end up doing before the 2026 season. Whether Berrios is traded before the year begins or ahead of the deadline, it seems likely that he’ll find a new team before long.
