The Dodgers are rolling, having won eight of their last 10 games. They have the most wins in the majors and are on a pace to win over 110 games.
For the most part they have survived the numerous pitching injuries of both the starting rotation and bullpen. However, now they are looking at possibly being without their “butter and egg man” Teoscar Hernández for a while.
In Monday night’s win against the Miami Marlins, Hernandez left the game early in what manager Dave Roberts described as tightness in Hernández’s left hamstring and adductor. He felt it as he was running after a ball in the gap on defense.
Hernández was set to receive an MRI Tuesday. James Outman has joined the Dodgers, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, though no roster move has been announced yet.
Losing Hernández for any period of time would be a big blow to the Dodgers lineup. Teoscar currently leads the team in batting average, RBI, hits, doubles and slugging, and is tied for the most home runs on the teams with Shohei Ohtani.
The team also just lost Tommy Edman to the injured list, retroactive to April 30.
Hyeseong Kim was called up to take Edman’s place on the 26-man roster. Before he was called up, Roberts said that they would not be promoting Kim to the big leagues if he wasn’t going to stay. Now the likelihood of that happening is even stronger, with both of those injuries, and how Kim has played since the call up. Absolutely a small sample size, but in two games Kim already has two hits, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
It will be interesting to see how the Dodgers absorb yet another key injury.
Tuesday night’s pitching matchup for the middle game of the Marlins series will be Tony Gonsolin and Cal Quantril. Gonsolin will be making his second start since returning from his long rehab from Tommy John surgery. He went six innings in his first outing, allowing three earned runs and striking out nine. Quantrill is 2-3 on the season with an 8.10 ERA. He survived only 3⅔ innings in his last outing which was also against the Dodgers on April 30, allowing four earned runs.
