Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo was taken out of Thursday’s Grapefruit League matinee against the Detroit Tigers with an apparent injury.

The injury occurred in the top of the third inning during a play at the plate.

Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo got hurt on a 9-4-2 relay play at the plate. He tagged the runner for the out, but then stayed down for a bit and got checked over by head athletic trainer Scott Barringer.

With the Orioles leading 2-1, Lee Hao-yu doubled to right field off of O’s starter Dean Kremer. Matt Vierling attempted to score from first, but was thrown out at home by Jeremiah Jackson’s relay. After Basallo reached across the plate to tag Vierling, he was in visible discomfort as he was tended to by Vierling and teammates.

Basallo stayed down before being checked by the team’s athletic trainer and walking off of the field. He did not return.

Kremer told the team broadcast that Basallo indicated he was okay, but cautioned that he didn’t know the pertinent details of the injury.

“Seems fine, seems okay,” Kremer said. “But I’m not the medical professional here.”

A 21-year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Basallo made his big league debut last August as one of the Orioles’ prized prospects. He went on to appear in 31 games, batting .165 with 18 hits, four home runs, 15 runs batted in and an OPS of .559.

Shortly after his debut, Basallo signed an eight-year, $67 million extension with the team that takes him through the 2033 season.
