Former MLB pitcher, Daniel Serafini, sentenced to life for murdering his father-in-law

  • February 28, 2026

AUBURN, Calif. (KOLO) – On Friday, Feb. 27, former professional baseball pitcher Daniel Joseph Serafini, 51, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for the murder of his father-in-law and attempted murder of his mother-in-law, according to a Placer County District Attorney’s Office Facebook post.

“The defendant’s horrific crimes took the lives of a father, mother, loving grandparents, family members and friends,” said Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire. “The impact of this attack has extended far beyond the immediate victims, deeply affecting family members and the broader community, and highlighting the lasting harm caused by deliberate violence.”

The six-week trial included extensive testimony in addition to forensic and digital evidence.

Jurors heard about heated disputes over financial obligations and communications leading up to the murder and determined that the defendant’s actions were deliberate and premeditated, the post said.

Then the defendant filed multiple motions for a new trial, which were denied after months of additional proceedings.

This case demanded extraordinary diligence from the prosecutorial and investigative teams, including the lead prosecutor, the District Attorney’s investigator, victim advocate, and Sheriff’s Office investigators.

The post said there was thoughtful preparation, meticulous review of complex evidence, and steadfast commitment to uncovering the truth.

The Placer County District Attorney’s Office also extends gratitude to the jurors who dedicated weeks of their lives to hearing testimony and then continuing to engage through post-trial motions.

The Placer County District Attorney’s Office remains committed to pursuing justice in cases involving calculated acts of violence, and to supporting victims and communities whose lives are affected by these crimes.

Judge Alan V. Horst of the Placer County Superior Court presided over the sentencing.
