Do the Arizona Diamondbacks have the best middle infield in baseball?
Yes, they do, according to recent rankings from ESPN’s Buster Olney.
Olney is ranking the Top 10 MLB players at each position for the 2026 season, and he has Arizona’s Ketel Marte ranked as the top second baseman in baseball, with the Diamondbacks’ Geraldo Perdomo ranked as the No. 2 shortstop in baseball.

Of Marte, Olney wrote: “You can understand why Arizona maintained a high asking price on Marte before deciding not to trade him. Over the past three seasons, he has produced about 15 fWAR, or about $135 million in value, while making $40 million under the terms of his contract. Even in a season in which he invited scrutiny by going AWOL after the All-Star break following his home being robbed — a decision for which he eventually apologized to his team — he was still an incredibly effective player, with 28 homers, 87 runs and a 145 OPS+ in 126 games. He excels offensively, and while the numbers suggest he is just average defensively, he continues to be the preeminent player at this position.”
Of Perdomo, Olney wrote: “Shohei Ohtani has an enormous advantage in the annual NL MVP conversation because of his two-way skills, but if you were to draw up a list of if-not-Shohei candidates, Perdomo would be in the mix. He led all NL position players in WAR last season with 7.0, excelling offensively and defensively and posting an adjusted OPS of 139. The Diamondbacks have loved his progression as a leader as well. Perdomo’s main area of growth in 2025, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo wrote in a text, ‘was from the offensive side. Balanced out his [left-right] splits. Maintained great plate discipline while improving his slug. The sky is the limit with him because of his aptitude and willingness to keep learning. He has a massive understanding of what the game inside the game looks like, and thinks like a manager.'”

Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte give the Diamondbacks a formidable middle infield, perhaps even the best middle infield in baseball.
The Chicago Cubs’ Nico Hoerner came in second among second basemen in the ESPN rankings, with the New York Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm ranked No. 3. The Milwaukee Brewers’ Brice Turang was ranked No. 4, while the Seattle Mariners’ Brendon Donovan rounded out the Top 5.
Perdomo only trailed the Kansas City Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. in the ESPN shortstop rankings. The Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson was No. 3, while the New York Mets‘ Francisco Lindor was No. 4. Corey Seager of the Texas Rangers rounded out the Top 5.
