Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte is out of the lineup on Tuesday night, May 27, due to illness, manager Torey Lovullo said.
“He’s got the flu,” Lovullo said. “We’re going to nurse him back to health. As of right now, available potentially off the bench.”
Rookie Jordan Lawlar is getting the start at second base against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Marte, who had two hits in the Diamondbacks’ series-opening, 5-0 win over the Pirates the night before, is hitting an impressive .283/.392/.566 in 106 at-bats this season.
Lovullo said Marte was feeling “not even close to 100 percent.”
“I just saw him for a few minutes and he doesn’t look well,” Lovullo said. “He’s resting.”

Eduardo Rodriguez set for rehab start
Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on May 27 and will then advance to make a minor league rehab appearance in an Arizona Complex League game on May 30, Lovullo said.
“I just want him to get through that (rehab start) healthy, get through his bullpen tomorrow and get through that in a healthy way, and then we’ll figure out what we’ll do next,” Lovullo said. “We don’t know what decision we’re going to make right now based on how he does.”
Both Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen said the day before that Rodriguez would be returning to the starting rotation once he is healthy, but that would suggest the club is going to bump right-hander Ryne Nelson back into a relief role.
Nelson has looked sharp in two starts in Rodriguez’s place, including 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over the Pirates on May 26.
Nelson has been one of the club’s better pitchers since midway through last season. Rodriguez has not.
In nine starts this season, Rodriguez has a 7.05 ERA. In 19 starts with the Diamondbacks, who signed him to a four-year, $80 million deal before last season, Rodriguez has a 5.99 ERA.
“I think more consistent command,” Hazen said, when asked what he believes Rodriguez needs to do better. “(In San Francisco) I think he got a little wobbly with the strike zone, walking guys you shouldn’t walk, getting behind guys you shouldn’t get behind, and then there were some damage shots.”
