All right, the Cincinnati Reds earned a nine to seven win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday in spring training.
it was a great offensive performance to say the least, but the pitching wasn’t quite there.
And that’s surprising because Hunter Green, the Reds ace, was on the mound.
Now, Green, of course, one of the best pitchers in baseball, an all-star.
He, he could be a Cy Young candidate this year.
he allowed four earned runs in just one inning of work.
He walked a hitter and surrendered five hits as well.
Now, it’s obviously important to remember that in spring training, a lot of pitchers are working on new things.
They’re– They have specific plans that they are implementing in each start.
The results don’t really matter.
So in spring training, that is.
So for Green, this isn’t a big deal.
But, he did talk about it after the game and the whole– the full quote’s in here.
But, you know, basically, he just said he, he was trying to fill the zone up, and he maybe left the, the– his pitches in the middle of the zone too often today.
And just one of those things, you know, it happens.
But Hunter Green’s gonna be just fine.
There’s no reason to panic, obviously.
But, no doubt a tough start, and it’s something he’ll, he’ll work on and surely bounce back from.
But the offense was the story.
And I never wanna react over– I never wanna overreact to spring training games.
But, you know, I think when you talk about the Reds, like the pitching is their strength.
And when the offense can go out and have a good game, it’s promising, like spring training or not.
You know, we saw Matt McClain hit a home run, two for three today, two runs scored in RBI.
McClain’s a guy who’s trying to have a bounce back year.
That-that’s big in my opinion.
Michael Chavis trying to make the team.
He hit a home run.
Elly De La Cruz went one through three with a double.
He’s not trying to make the team.
He’s on the team.
We all know that.
He’s a superstar.
But nevertheless, good to see the stars playing well.
So again, spring training, not gonna overreact, but it is, it was promising to see the offense go out and have the, the day they did and really pick up their ace, you know, `cause as good as Green is, he’s still gonna have a start here and there that isn’t great.
So to see the offense pick him up, that’s encouraging.
