A former Los Angeles Dodgers star will be helping the team from the front office this season.

Chase Utley has returned from London and has taken the role of special assistant to president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.

The exact responsibilities of that position, however, remain a little nebulous, and Utley told “Dodger Talk” that he’s “trying to feel it out.”

“Right now, I’m happy with what we’re doing, which is spending some time with the Dodgers and the front office and their players, but also have some time for my family,” Utley said, as reported by Peter Chawaga of Forbes.

What Has Chase Utley Been up to?

In 2022, Utley and his family relocated to London so he could be an MLB ambassador to Europe, a role that involves “working to introduce more and more people to baseball in Europe,” reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

“It involves work at the grassroots level, educating the media about baseball, promotional work and more,” Zolecki added.

That time abroad has come to an end, with the Southern California native and his family returning to the area.

Utley’s time in the MLB is probably most associated with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played nearly 13 seasons before being traded to the Dodgers.

Utley won a World Series in 2008 with the Phillies and remains beloved in Philadelphia, though people sometimes forget he starred for the UCLA Bruins before his time in the pros.

What Was Chase Utley Like for the Dodgers?

As a Dodger, Utley was in his late 30s, playing from ages 36 to 39.

In that time frame, he slashed .236/.315/.381 with 26 home runs and 109 total RBIs over four years.

His best season was 2016, his first full season in Los Angeles, in which he slashed .252/.319/.396 with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Compare that to his 13 years in Philadelphia, where he slashed .282/.366/.481 and hit 233 home runs and 916 RBIs.

A six-time All-Star, Utley had more than 100 RBIs in a season four times and more than 30 home runs three times.
